On March 11, 2021, a group of concerned individuals gathered to discuss the possibility of forming a museum in the city of LaGrange that could reflect, remember, and embrace the African American Impact on the city and surrounding communities. These individuals were all volunteers, and to this day remain committed volunteers driving this desire to bring this idea to reality.
The original members of the group were Gwendolyn Ware Redwine, Founder/ CEO, and member of the LaGrange Historic Preservation Commission, Dr. Betty Ludd, serving as the facilitator, Alton L. West, city of LaGrange staff member, Muriel Dious, friend of Dr. Ludd, who served as secretary.
Members were added in June of that year and the board was formed. The organization received its official name during the meeting held on July 9, 2021, Enlightenment Center for African American History. Other names that were considered were African American Museum of Home, and the Awakening Museum of African American History.
Preserving Our Heritage, Telling Our Story Our Way, Through Our African American History.
The Enlightenment Center for African American History, ECAAH, was organized to provide education, information, preservation and hope for Black history, through curating collections highlighting the cultural importance of African Americans to U.S. and world history.
ECAAH is a growing organization and is currently collecting and compiling historical data within our community of our beloved Troup County, Georgia. Our exhibition seeks to engage, educate, inspire and fulfill each visitor with our county's rich African American history.
